'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde (1908)
For sale is a re-bound copy of the first illustrated edition of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde. This edition was published by Charles Carrington with engravings by Eugene Dete. The book is dated as 1908 and was intended to be published on this year, but the illustrator fell ill after the text pages were printed and the publication was delayed to 1910. There is a tipped-in slip at the front of the book from the publisher explaining this.
The binding is in half vellum with grey cloth sides. The original binding was very similar but with faux vellum. The top edge of the book block has been hand gilded, leaving the other two edges deckled as original. The endpapers are hand marbled in blue, greys and gold.
The book comes with a foredge sleeve made from 3mm book board and covered in cloth - vellum can be a very strong material and so, to avoid any warping while not in use, this sleeve is placed over the foredge as a preventative. The sleeve is purposefully tight on the book for this very reason.
The book and sleeve come in a grey cloth covered solander box which is lined with white suede.
The book itself is in fantastic condition and is clean throughout. All printed tissue guards are present.
