'The Outsider' by Albert Camus (1946)
For sale is a very recently re-bound copy of 'The Outsider' by Albert Camus. First published as 'L'Etranger' in France in 1942, this is the first English language edition published by Hamish Hamilton in 1946. Translated from the French by Stuart Gilbert and with an introduction by Cyril Connolly. 104pp.
This copy has been bound in hand-dyed goatskin and worked over with gold leaf. The gold was applied heavily to cover the leather and then gently worked away to reveal the blue dyed leather underneath. As the book is moved and turned in different lights, it shines and dulls, simulating the sunlight the protagonist feels at a pivotal point in the story. The title and author names have been stamped in a lighter gold to the front board.
The top edge of the book has been hand gilded, leaving the other two edges untrimmed and as original. Endpapers are hand marbled paper backed onto a light blue, slightly textured paper. The book comes in a suede lined, silk covered slipcase. The front of the slipcase is foil blocked with the title and author names and comes with a curved edge.
Internally, the book is in excellent condition with only some very slight spotting on a couple of page edges.
