'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll (1868)

'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll (1868)

For sale is a very recently rebound edition of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll. This is the 1868 edition (12th thousand) published by MacMillan and illustrated by John Tenniel.

This is an extremely early edition of this most famous of works. The first edition being published just a couple of years earlier in 1865/66 and with only 12 thousand copies preceeding this 1868 edition.

This copy has been bound in dark green Harmatan goatskin leather with marbled endpapers by Brazilian marbling artist Renato Crepaldi. There are five, hand tooled, raised bands to the spine with author and title stamped in gold. There are hand tooled blind single line frames to the front and back board, with an illustration from within the book recreated in gold to the front.

This book has been stripped and re-sewn completely meaning that this is now a very strong book block. The page edges have not been trimmed - the gilding is as original.

The book comes in a half leather solander box, with the same dark green leather and handmade marbled paper. The trays are covered in book cloth and lined with suede material.

Internally the book is in great condition for it's age and in comparison to similar editions. There are some thumb marks throughout but this is a children's book and has obviously been well read over the years. There is a gift inscription on the verso of the original front endpaper, dated 1868.
